Feature & Vision

    To catch up economy growth and the needs for the professionals in Electrical Engineering and information related industries, the structure of the College mainly consists of two departments and multiple institutes, and the development of the graduate institutes is our first task. The academic fields of electrical engineering include communications and signal processing, automatic control, computer science, Power/Power Electronic Engineering, solid state electronics, electromagnetic waves, electro-optics, medical engineering and Integrated Circuit and systems, etc. 
    On the other hand, the academic fields of Computer Science and Information Engineering include computer architecture, computer systems, artificial intelligence, distributed computing, computer networks, multimedia, natural language processing, parallel computing, intelligence robots, financial computing, scientific computing and automated reasoning, etc. These two fields probably covermost widest in Taiwan, which provides the educational training of students with depth and breadth. 
    Also, to pursue the excellent performance, to pioneer the fields of research and to elevate the research result among the world’s best university are always the characteristics of the College during the development. The departments and institutes of electrical engineering and computer science are already known for their successes nationally and internationally. After the establishment of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), the combination of the resources from both the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has become huge in scale. The faculty resource is very sufficient to facilitate the performance of team work and to pursue more profound research success. We are dedicated to make NTU the international center of the academic research.
   Not only actively participate many academic activities, which is held by international organizations in order to elevate the status of Taiwan’s technological development. The departments and institutes of electrical engineering and computer science are constantly makingefforts to promote social services and the cooperation between education and industries.In social services, our faculty are often consulted or hired as service providers and consultants by organizations and authorities such as Academia Sinica, Science and Technology Advisory Group of Executive Yuan, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Ministry of Defense, National Science Council, Government Information Office, Taipei City Government, Industrial Technology Research Institute, Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, Institute for Information Industry, various national and private universities, TSMC, UMC, and so on.
   To promote computer education, the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science have started computer training sessions, and also joined with Communication Research Center to provide CAD training courses, computer and information system training sessions for on-the-job training. Recently, in order to meet the public demands, semi-conductor professionals training sessions, communication professionals training courses and programming personnel training courses are provided with.
    In technological research and cooperation with industries, we perform various research projects for National Science Council, Ministry of Education, Chung Hwa Telecom Laboratories, Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, Industrial Technology Research Institute, Institute for Information Industry and other private corporations annually and the funding has reached precedent 900 million NT dollars, which is a tremendous success. With the establishment of the College, the faculty of EE and computer science have effectively combined all available resources to contribute to social services, education promotion and industrial cooperation, which is known to the society.

Electrical Engineering Division 

     Electrical engineering and computer science cover a wide range of fields, so the priority of development of the College aims on diversity and focus on R&D works on latest technologies. And at proper timing, the College recruits faculties and creates or integrates graduate institutes and divisions to synchronize with international research trends. Currently the priority of development of Electrical Engineering Division includes: semi-conductor, electromagnetic waves, communications and networks, signal processing, automatic control, power engineering, Integrated Circuit and systems, medical electrical engineering and electro-optical engineering. The priority of development of Computer Science Division includes: information engineering theories, information systems and software technologies, computer systems, network and multimedia technologies, intelligence and knowledge technologies.
    The graduate students of the Graduate Institute of Electronics Engineering (GIEE) are divided into groups such as automatic control, Power/Power Electronic Engineering , computer, medical engineering, electro-optics of GIEOE, electromagnetic waves, communications and signal processing of GICE, and nano-electronics, Integrated Circuit and systems and automated electrical designg. The research works of faculty members are also carried out in the labs of the above 10 groups. In addition, the Department of EE has computer center to support teaching and research works. The foci of each groups and computer center are listed ads follows:

• Automatic Control Group 
   The development of Automatic Control Group in the early year focused on the control of motors and robots. After years of evolution, the current research is full of diversity and enjoyment, and covers both theories and applications. The theoretical research includes learning control, neural network, multivariable systems, generalized systems , data fusion, adaptive control , nonlinear control, r robust control, technology and principles of optimization, computer integrated manufacture systems, discrete event dynamic system, decision rule and intelligent control, and so on. 
   The applied research includes flight control, muscle movement control, 3D vision, remote spectroscopy reading , satellite positioning, unmanned vehicle movements, aircraft navigation, flexible robotic arm control, motor revolution control, maglev stage movements, image tracking, auto pilot design, design and manufacture of direction-finding systems, biaxial cannon chassis rotation control, automation and management of semi-conductor manufacture, network control and management, flight scheduling, precision platforms, hard disc drives, vibration resistant platforms, jukebox systems, and so on. There are now 7 professors, Te- Son Kuo, Wei- Song Lin, Fan- Ren Chang, Li-Chen Fu, I-Kong Fong , Shi -Chung Chang and Yung- Yaw Chen, and 1 fellow professor and 1 associate professor, Yu-Huan Lin and Ming-Chang Tsai respectively, in this group. In addition to automatic control lab for undergraduate students, the group has 4 more labs for graduate institutes, which are intelligent and precision movement control lab, advanced control lab, advanced sensing and computer control lab and control and decision lab.
   After graduation, most of the graduate students enter industries for practical works or dive into academic community for theoretical research and teaching. The undergraduate students who are interested in automatic control engineering may choose to major in control systems, linear systems, signal and systems, system engineering, and remote sensing principles etc, while taking control experiments, and then further choose to take graduate institute courses as interested.

 Power/Power Electronics Engineering Group 
   The major research areas of Power/Power Electronics Engineering group currently cover distribution system automation, AI in Power/Power Electronic Engineering application, stability analysis, electrical power defense system, computer relaying , motor control and power electronics. There are power lab, distribution system automation lab, electrical control lab and power electronics lab in this group. The group required students to emphasize both theoretical analysis as well as practice. The topics of research mostly focus on practical applications.

• Computer Science Group 
   The foci of development in this group are computer systems and networks, covering advances networking, information polling, mobile communication computing, information safety techniques, real-time micro core operation systems, intelligent systems, system fault-tolerance techniques, software reliability, computing theories, and computer music etc. The research labs include internet research lab, network database lab, network computing and safety lab, high performance computing lab, software engineering lab, discrete systems and network lab and computer science lab etc. Also, as the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science established, the cooperation and interaction between this group and the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering increase as well. In time, more success can be expected.

 Biomedical Engineering Group 
  There are two major directions of development in Biomedical Engineering Group, which are medical instruments and medical imaging. The medical instrument labs include biomedical signal lab, biomedical photonics lab, technology lab for the physically and mentally handicapped and medical instrument lab. The research topics include biomedical signal processing, biomedical photonic signal and image processing modules, and the R&D of the technology lab for the physically and mentally handicapped and medical instruments and systems. 
  The medical imaging labs consist of MRI lab and ultrasonic imaging lab. The emphasis of research is on improving medical imaging technology and measuring new important parameters in human bodies so such applications may be broadened to animals, plants, materials, food technology and social science such as cognitive sciences, linguistics and psychology. And the meantime, through the implementation of industrial and academic cooperation plans, the result of academic research can be realized on the establishment of industrial technologies in medical engineering. In the future, micro mechanical and electrical sensing, opto-medical electronics and micro-electronic technology, combined with intelligent software, can be used on biomedical systems, which will be promising and highly potential. In the recent years, biological and medical information has become the trends of technology development of the new century. Medical group hopes to contribute in this field. Through the inter-institute cooperation with Electronic Circuits, CS and ICS, Biomedical Engineering Group are now able to perform biological chips, medical information and other related research.

• Electro-Optical Engineering Group Photonics and Optoelectronics
  Since electro-optical engineering group was established, the goals of development has been to match the development emphasis of Taiwan’s electro-optical technology and to cover the fields such as optical information, optical communications, laser optics and photonic technology, electro-optical measuring, sensing and control, integrated optics and components, semi-conductor laser and opto-electronic components, nonlinear optics and applications and electro-optical engineering in medical application. Electro-optical technology has an inter-disciplinary characteristic, and, besides electro-optical engineering group , the Department of EE has 9 research groups ranging from communications to medical engineering. Therefore, the electro-optical engineering group can have close cooperation with faculty and students from other groups.

• Electromagnetic Waves Group 
  Electromagnetic Waves Group has started the observation and research on ionosphere since 1950 to support the needs of military and civilian short wave radio stations. In 1974, the group started to enter the field of digital electromagnetic, and later expanded into other magnetic-related fields. Currently there are 11 professors, 1 associate professor and 5 assistant professors. The research topics carried out range widely, including: antenna, transmission cables, planar waveguide, numeric analysis in electromagnetics, IC packaging, ceramic components, microwave and m illimeter-wave circuit design, active component analysis and circuit design, electromagnetic compatibility, fiber optics, microwave imaging, radar target identification, inverse scattering and medical application, mobile communication and application, electromagnetic wave transmission, transmission characteristics of wireless channels, intelligent antenna systems and intelligent transportation systems. The labs of Electromagnetic Waves Group, currently located on 5 th floor of second EE hall, consist of electromagnetic research lab (including the original electromagnetic wave lab and anechoic lab for microwave), microwave and millimeter-wave circuit lab (including circuit etching room, circuit board carving room, clean room, machine room and general measuring space), electromagnetic simulation lab and wireless communication lab, all of which are fully equipped and is competent internationally.
  At the present, the Electromagnetic Waves Group tops among all groups involving in this particular field in Taiwan. Over the past years, through the implementation of integration plan and national Communication plan and excellence pursuing plan, the faculties and the students under their instruction have gradually developed good cooperative and interactive patterns to bring the overall research capacities, academic dedication and reputation of this group to the global stage among the bests, while the students are well trained to be equipped with the ability to adapt to the rapid and changing environment, which are the goals that all faculty members are fighting for.

• Communication and Signal Processing Group 
  The goals of teaching and research for this group emphasize on both to provide solid fundamental knowledge for students and to deepen the knowledge and to broaden the visions of students. Currently the research topics of the group focuses on the advanced fields of communication and signal processing, such as fiber optical communication systems (optical communication lab, including transmission characteristics of fiber optics, synchronized fiber optical communication systems, fiber optical LAN and system simulation, etc.), wireless communications (wireless communication lab, including the establishment and simulation of radio transmission modes, transmission technology and systems, personal communication networking framework, mobile communication systems, ciphered communication systems, satellite and space communications, etc), communication theories and coding techniques (communication systems lab, including i nformation theory, digital modulation techniques, coding and ciphering techniques, synchronization techniques, spread spectrum communication techniques, etc), advanced networking technology (computer communication lab and communication system lab, including integrated communication protocol design and switching technique, multi-speed/multimedia switching technique, discussion on information safety and networking efficiency of multi-network connection framework, optical switching technique, etc), intelligent voice processing (digital voice lab), intelligent image processing (image processing lab), digital signal processing and application technology (digital signal processing lab, including digital coding and compressing, voice and image processing, image analysis and pattern recognition, integrated high quality television technique, etc).

• Nano-Electronics Group 
   The research areas of this group consists of electronic and electro-optical components of chemical compound semi-conductor, integrated optics, VLSI components and simulation, non-crystallized and multi-crystallized silicon components, and new type silicon components and manufacturing process. There are m olecular beam epitaxy lab, integrated optics lab, CVD lab, evaporation chamber, clean room, measuring lab for infra-red, white noise, capacitance, current and materials. The technologies developed are used in wireless communications, optical communications, infra-red night vision and IC manufacturing process, and the future new technology and fundamental research are being studied. The main equipments consist of sputtering system, 2 m olecular beam epitaxy systems, new e-beam evaporator, various membrane evaporators, rapid thermal process equipment, rapid thermal CVD reactor and measuring equipments for white noise, electrical characteristics and low temperature.

• Integrated Circuit and System Group 
  This group is the best manned and most capable research group in IC and system design in Taiwan. The research emphasis is placed on IC design CAD, covering digital video processing algorithm and system design, HDL certified software, HF communication components and circuit design, communication base band and MF related algorithm, analog front-end circuit and IC design, power integrated circuits, switching power supply and plasma displays, CAD practical design, parallel design of hardware and software, digital-analog hybrid circuit design, IC testing and fault-tolerance design and IC component simulation, etc. The development priority in the future will be to:

1. Improve the IC design environment to train high quality IC design professional;
2. Develop IC system design technology to produce system design ability;
3. Interact with domestic industries and promote the research result to assist local industries; and,
4. Interact with academic community, elevate the group’s academic research capability and expect to lead the world in future development.

• Electronic Design Automation Group 
   In the recent years, with the strategic promotion by industries, government, academic community and research groups, IC design industries have been flourishing in Taiwan. Due to the improving IC manufacture process technology and increasing design complexity, it is necessary to use CAD to assist IC design. Therefore, Electronic Design Automation, EDA, has grown more and more important in IC design industries. Realizing this, the National Si Soft Project has listed the development of domestic EDA industry as an index field. Therefore, the training of EDA professionals is urgent. Particularly in recent years, there were many domestic EDA tools grabbing international attention and internationally leading EDA corporations have set up R&D departments in Taiwan, which are very helpful in improving the production values and capabilities of Taiwan’s IC industries.
  To match the trends of industrial development, the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Graduate Institute of Electronic Engineering at NTU have recruited many professors who are known internationally as elite in EDA area. For the success of improving teaching and research, in Aug. 2004, the EDA group was separated from ICS group and became the first one in Taiwan to integrate electronics and information and started admitting graduate students pursuing M.S. and doctor degrees.
   The group is now being offered with scholarship for doctor students (25,000 NT per month) and M.S. students (15,000 NT per month) from several industries. 8 professors have granted research funds of 5 million NT in average per person each year (5.5 research projects per person in average). The sponsors include TSMC, Agilent, SpringSoft, Intel, Avery Design Co., Ltd., Cadence, SynTest Technologies, Quanta Computer, Incentia, Faraday Technology , UMC, MediaTak, and Kuan-Ta Technology, and so on. In recent years, the number of theses that faculties and students published in the top international EDA conferences (DAC and ICCAD) and the success in the IC/CAD competition held by Ministry of Education have surpassed all other universities in Taiwan. Many professors have won national and international academic honors, e.g. excellent research award by NSC, elite professor award by the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering, Mr. Ta-Yu Wu memorial award by NSC, DAC thesis award by SpringSoft Education Foundation (the only one who have won two in a roll), M.S. thesis instruction award by NSC, and have been chosen as committee members or chairmen in many international EDA conferences such as ASPDAC, DAC, DATE, ICCAD, ICCD, ISCAS, ISPD and ATVA etc, and many research results have won the best theses in national and international occasions, including ACM/IEEE DAC, ACM/IEEE ISSRE, ACM ISPD, the best thesis of IEEE ICCD , IEEE/ACM ICCAD, ACM/IEEE ASPDAC, ACM TODAES and nominee for best thesis of IEEE ICCD, have been reported in EE times.
   The founding of EDA group will create many high quality and internationally competitive advanced professional in IC software and hardware design and IC system integration, which will lift the overall capabilities in IC design to face the upcoming challenge.

Computer Science Division

   The faculty of Computer Science research group has covered all professors of Graduate Institute of Computer Science and Information Engineering, which include the recruited professors of Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia, the recruited professors of Computer Group in Department of EE, part of the newly recruited professors of Graduate Institute of Computer Engineering that will soon be established, and the recruited professors of Graduate Institute of Biological Information that will soon be established.

    The undergraduate curriculum of CSIE is to set the foundation in computer science and information engineering for students, while the M.S. courses are to train advanced engineers and to pave the path for future teaching and research works, and Ph.D. courses are to guide the students deeper into academic fields. Students are given proper training at each stage of study to create first-class information and computer professionals and improve the domestic and global competitiveness.

    The vision of the College is to achieve four targets: Extraordinary, Enlightenment, Contribution, and Super-eminent.
    The College aims to cultivate high-tech experts and develop leadership qualities with a truly professional background. The ambition of the College is to become one of the most important global education and research institutes in the electrical engineering and computer science areas.
